Silent Giants

Silent giants

Effortlessly they bear the weight

Of fresh ivory robes

Stoic in their majesty

They bear witness to the silent streets

As I pass on awestruck

Alone but not

And grateful for their watch

I wonder at how many times before I passed

Never mindful of their protective stare

Until this bitter night

Where the air danced like fireflies in summer

As it sowed the regal tribute

To those who have stood this watch

For many years before I knew the path

And will for many since
